The Cortijo del Hornillo offers spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada. The ascent to the natural viewpoint allows you to contemplate from the Alcazaba and the Mulhacén to the Puntal de Vacares and the Caldera. The route that leads from the Barranco de San Juan to the Cortijo del Hornillo, almost parallel to the Vereda de la Estrella but higher, is one of the most unknown and yet most impressive medium mountain trails.

The route shown isn't the full or only loop (it's for the Cortijo del Hornillo), and the complaints about the view change when you cross to the north side of the Genil. The route then becomes 22.5 km but the views are unbeatable with the back range in view at every turn. There's a steep ascent after crossing the river, a bit of route-finding past Refugio de la Cucaracha, and steep downhill down to the river at the back of the canyon before you turn to come back.

This is a reasonable circular trail with a stiff initial ascent but is not all that interesting. In fact a lot of it leading up to Cortijo del Hornillo is a trudge. And it's 17.5km long! Only at the Cortijo del Hornillo does the mountain panarama open out. Back down on the Sulyar trail there are some spectacular poised sections above the river on the well made trail.
