Due to COVID the national park is closed Dec 24th-January 3rd. We went today and were very disappointed.

Solid hike. Bring a good pair of hiking shoes and clothes. I saw one Korean woman with leather pants and club shoes on. She was hating life. Also bring plenty of water and snacks, you'll need your energy. That said, wouldn't call it "hard" though. I'd recommend Seongpanak to start and loop over and finish at Gwaneumsa. You'll get the best of both worlds. Start early, aim for 8am at the latest. You need to pass the shelter before noon otherwise you won't be allowed to the summit. Taxi at the end is about 20,000W to Jeju city, but save 18,800W and just take bus 475 and transfer at the University to where you're going.

HikingGreat!

Hiked Hallasan, via gwaneumsa trail (out-and-back), on a Sunday. Started at 8:15 am and summited at 11:45 am. Very minimal traffic. Areas for rest are plentiful and bathroom facilities are available. I would recommend walking sticks for the descent. Overall, gorgeous hike with beautifully maintained trails!

This is one of my absolute favorite hikes. Halla really delivers at the top. And the whole trail down is a completely different feel than the top.

Started at the north trailhead and hiked south to the summit. Although this route is considered the more difficult of the two trails that lead to the top, it has better views that than the east trailhead. For the best of both options, take the point-to-point route. Although you will certainly be tired by the time you reach this point, around mile 7.5 (of the route I took), there is an offshoot trail to a small lake. There is a boardwalk over the lake where you can sit down, take off you boots and soak your feet in the cool water. It'll definitely reinvigorate you for the remaining 4 miles. If you have a rental car, there are plenty of taxis hanging around both trailheads so you can easily catch a ride back to where you started.

Rocks on the trail made it a not so enjoyable and challenging hike. Climbed up Gwaneumsa and down Seyongpanak. Made it to first checkpoint with 30 min to spare and to the top at 1320. Took me 5 hrs. All hikers must start descent at 1330. Took me 4 hrs. I've hiked longer and climbed higher trails before. Some of them I will do it over again. This one I am happy to check it off my list.

We hiked up Seongpanak and down Gwaneumsa, it was a good but not great hike, mostly due to the massive crowds. We arrived at the trailhead at 0900 on the 281 bus from Seogwipo, and the parking lot was already almost full. The trail guide was very helpful in showing us which buses to take back to Seogwipo from gwaneumsa, and told us there’s a checkpoint about 2/3 up that you need to reach by 1230, or else you’ll be turned around! The hike itself is pretty difficult, but does have some good views of pretty much the whole island. I’d do it again, but would go much earlier in the day.

Contained lots of stairs. Did this hike in the pouring rain while there was a tsunami warning on the island but it was great having the place to ourselves. Saw some rare wildlife, probably due to the lack of crowds

Wild. Quite a difficult hike, definitely start early! The trail is "timed"- have to reach certain points by a certain time, otherwise you're forced to turn around. The views were great and there's a photo-op at the summit next to a rock that (probably) says you've reached the summit.
