* There is a Kloofnek parking lot at the start of the Pipe Track where you can leave your car. * You can find red disas blooming along Echo Valley and other parts of the track during February and March. * The weather on top of the mountain can be drastically different from where you started so always take a jacket (as you should on any hike). * Have a Plan B to cut the route short and get to the upper cable station quickly if you hear the sound of the fog horn signalling an imminent closure due to poor weather conditions. Also have a Plan C (e.g. Platteklip Gorge) to descend in case you miss the last car to the lower station. A headlamp may be useful should you be forced to make this descent and run out of daylight. These are worst case scenarios but ones I've encountered two or three times during many years of hiking the mountain.

Starting at Kloof Nek parking instead of closer to the start of the Diagonal route adds a nice 45-minute "warmup" to the hike--only a few extra km, and a beautiful walk. Be sure to stop at the cave before rounding Porcupine Buttress and take in the views. The scrambles on the Diagonal are (for the most part) balanced out with fairly flat sections, so there is usually a respite between climbs. The longest scramble is up Porcupine Ravine, but the views are phenomenal. Turning the route into a loop and returning via Kasteelspoort is a nice alternative, and makes the return a bit more interesting. Both trails are hot in summer and have very little shade; please be careful to bring enough water. :-)
