We took this route on 8/28/19 in perfect weather. It took us 9 hours from the North Face carpark and back. It’s an absolutely stunning route. Arduous and challenging, but it’s the only way to get to the summit of Ben Nevis that’s worth the work. The alternative is the miserable pony track/tourist route. No real exposure on the arete unless you look for it. Tough scrambling, but nothing a healthy person couldn’t manage. The slog from the carpark to the summit of CMD is long and a bit boggy and brutal (3+ hours for us) but the arete is the reward. The views all around are incredible if the weather cooperates. Could be dangerous in bad weather if visibility is poor. We took the pony track down on the return, of we did this again we’d take the arete back down again instead as the pony track is just as boring going down as it would be going up. A couple of water sources (river on the way to CMD, waterfalls on the way down the pony track, halfway lake, all need filters and purification due to sheep in the area). A fantastic hike all around.
