Getting There

Note: it has been reported the Radical Road is CLOSED due to a rockslide, however this does not mean you can not complete the hike to Arthur's Seat. Experience a proper hill walk in the heart of the city. Arthur's Seat's rocky summit towers over Edinburgh, with fabulous views in all directions, and the extensive parkland surrounding it is an oasis of calm as a retreat from the busy city. Arthur's Seat is the highest of a group of hills, formed from the remains of a volcano, that make up Holyrood Park. The summit is 251 metres high and surprisingly rocky and wild for a hill in the centre of a major city. Although it is popular, it still feels like a real get away from it all place.

Car park near Holyrood Palace.

Bus to Holyrood Palace east end of Royal Mile.

Don’t miss it, it’s just one of those hikes to do while you’re here. The main trail up is busy but on the backside of Arthur’s Seat (north & west) are a bunch of much less frequented hilltops with fun scramble faces. The full route on this trail will get you there but you can add on. Check out Arthur’s Seat but the other trails are a more enjoyable & enticing playground.

Beautiful trail, hiked this three times when in Scotland in 2011-2014. Moderately steep but short climb, stunning views from the top, beautiful green meadows up on the summit

No trip to the Edinburgh is complete without tackling Arthur's Seat, the summit of an ancient caldera in the center of Edinburgh. The summit gives your 360 panoramic views of the city. Note that there are several approaches and descents you can take. One path doesn't even summit the caldera but rather takes you merely half way with no path to summit. So, double check your route!

Good hike, great views. I really enjoyed how close to Edinburgh it was. Excellent for half day trips from the city.

This was a great hike. Lots of different little trails you can take depending on what views you would like to see and your skill level. Highly recommend!

Challenging trail if you’re not an experienced hiker. It’s about a 45 minute hike to the top with a steep climb/hike to reach the summit. Some steep and rocky areas, steps, and narrow spots. Wear proper hiking shoes for safety and a windbreaker for the top. Not for the casual tourist or sightseer.

Easy but rewarding hike with views in every direction! So many other side trails to explore in this area. We picked a perfect day for this but bring a windproof layer and warm clothes for the top since it's super windy up there! We got started around noon and by the time we finished up it was starting to get really crowded, so go earlier to avoid the crowds. Crowds or not, I'd do this hike again and again!

This is a short but fairly steep climb up to the extinct volcanic peak that overlooks the city and surrounding region. The 360-degree views here are stunning, and a great way to orientate yourself with the city's attractions. I'd highly recommend this hike to anyone visiting, it's well worth the short climb!

It was fun. Something of a free-for-all with all the trails up and down the hills. Tons of people at the top of Arthur's Seat, but apart from that it's certainly not the most crowded trail I've been on. Great views, great way to stretch the legs. Trails for all ages.

The summit is breathtaking; you can see all of Edinburgh! It’s amazing how windy it is at the tippity top — hold on tight!
