It is a short drive from Porto Moniz and it is certainly worth the effort to do the levada of Ribeira da Janela. It is a particularly long levada of 12.5 km and you have to return the same way. Most hiking guides recommend walking until after the first tunnel and then returning because the path would be in a worse state afterwards but this is a well maintained levada. There are picnic benches in some spectacular places. In other words, you could "picnic with a view". After a good 3 km you will arrive at a first tunnel from which you hardly see the end point. It therefore takes almost 10 minutes before you get through. When you exit the tunnel, you end up in a fairy-tale setting with a small waterfall clattering down to the right. Immediately afterwards a second tunnel follows, the end of which you cannot see now because it makes a sharp turn. The levada now and then becomes more adventurous and narrower. The path also becomes somewhat slippery. A number of tunnels now follow, one of which is even longer than the other. You can now decide for yourself how far you go, so keep in mind that you have to go all the way back and it is not going very smoothly in the tunnels. Afterwards, visit the natural seawater swimming pools of Porto Moniz where a dive offers a wonderful refreshment after a brisk and beautiful walk.
