Getting There

This trail takes place in the immense and magnificent mountains of Madeira. Along the way you can enjoy the wonderful landscapes composed by the formidable rock formations, sometimes covered by the clouds and the villages that can be seen in the distance. Stop once in a while and feel the great feeling to be closer to the sky. Also in this journey you can visit the three highest peaks of Madeira: Pico do Arieiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo. This is a mountain trail so it requires some physical preparation and endurance for hikers, who are faced with many ups and downs. However, the effort required is offset by extraordinary views that the walk provides. Once at Pico Ruivo you can relax, have a snack or visit the shelter. Finally, be sure to go to the top of the peak and elate with the landscape and breathtaking views of the peaks and villages. In sunny days, you may have a 360 degree view of the island with its main points highlighted: Curral das Freiras, Porto Santo, Desertas, Ponta de São Lourenço and others.

Restaurant, gift shop and accommodation in Pico do Arieiro. After that there's a couple of shelters throughout the way and finally a house just before the Pico Ruivo summit in which there are sometimes rangers (if open, I heard they sell water and chips).

* ALWAYS check the weather forecast as this hike is unfortunately infamous for weather-related fatalities * Don't do this if you are afraid of heights * You'll need a lot of energy for this so feel and hydrate well! * Prepare your knees for a beating * Be careful with some guard rails as they can hurt on the hands sometimes

You should arrive through Pico do Arieiro, which is accessible by car and has great views in itself. There's a free parking lot there, you shouldn't have issues parking the car.

Hands down the most incredible hike I've ever done. It is physically demanding as you have to go up and down many times and we were completed exhausted at the end.

Great hike!! worth the hard work. The views are amazing, take lots of water and a torch for the tunnels. Went during September 2019.

Great trail. Well maintained. View is magnificent. Make sure you wear a windbreaker. Even in a warm (70 degree) and sunny day, it can be very chilly because of the wind. The last 2 km is steep, ascend. Very hard. But the breathtaking 360 degree “mountain in the cloud” view at the top is well worth it. Took me 4 hours from Areirio to Pico Ruivo and 3.5 hours back. The hike takes lots of energy. Makes sure you bring enough water, energy bars or meat jerky. You will need them. There is restroom at Pick do Arieiro, 0.5 Euro per person. There is a store half mile from Pico Ruivo. Water is 2 Euro per 300ml bottle. Also a restroom there, 0.5 EURO.

This is an incredible walk but more like 13km due to path closures. The views are breathtaking and, when the clouds are in, the feeling of walking on top of them is something to experience.

this hike was incredible!! overall long hike mixed with a pretty intense elevation gain made it pretty difficult. the final climb on the way back to pico airieiro was tough. Views are absolutely stunning, best to start on a clear day and get there for sunset. lots of toilet paper and poops along the way.. not sure why so many people had to crap over the 6km stretch between ruvio and airieiro but perhaps too much poncha.

We hiked this trail at sunrise (started at 6:45am), with quite hard conditions: powerful wind and limited visibility due to the clouds. The conditions made it more challenging, but overall moderate trail, with challenging sections as you ascends the “Picos”. We finished the trail (return) in under 4hours and took breaks every now and then, and photos when we could. Waterproof Windbreaker jacket strongly recommended in this conditions. However, don’t get discouraged by by bad weather, it’s still a great trail to do!

Loved the trails. Loved the views. Put please people, if you're going to take toilet paper, please please take a plastic bag and take the toilet paper with you again. The amount of toilet paper on the trail is pretty disgusting and takes away from this magnificent hike.

Great views all the way - relatively easy walk for the most part but there are some very steep sections and parts with a lot of steps. Would recommend for people of moderate fitness and above. Weather at the top can be cloudy/misty so be sure to bring extra layers. There is a small house just before the Pico Ruivo summit that sells food & drink & has toilets. Some of the trail had been damaged by rockfalls so be aware that there are some slightly more precarious parts & steep drops - relevant for those with heights issues/vertigo.

Amazing views and scenery thoughout the walk. It is misclassified as a difficult hike. It is a moderately easy walk with some stairs. I only rated it as a 4 because I think that the paved path and man-made buildings take away from the incredible natural beauty. But stunning beauty throughout!

We hiked Pico Ruivo from Pico do Arieiro and back - it was demanding hike but it was worth the effort as views were just stunning- some of the most beautiful views I've ever seen. Some parts are very steep and narrow, so I wouldn't advice taking small children on this hike.
