This classic walk can be found in many hiking guides. You walk practically the entire time sheltered in the shade along the levada and you only get a glimpse of the landscape here and there. As the walk progresses you come across more open places where you have some nice viewpoints. The path at the lookouts is somewhat narrower but the dangerous passages are very well protected. Further on you will also pass a few tunnels, but a flashlight is not necessary here. The levada then comes to the level of the forester's cottage together with the levada of Serra do Faial from where it is still about 2 km to Portela.

Nice walk without climbing in forest along levada but absolutely boring because of almost no views! Definitely not hard,it was easy

If you do only one way -11km- it's pretty easy but beautiful. Almost walking on the same level - not climbing up . Great views all the time . We had some rain shower ,fog and clouds ( January) so be prepared to get wet. Might be slippery, too. If you miss the bus in Portela it's easy to grab the taxi there ( To Funchal ,6 Euro per person :) ).
