If you have to choose one walk on Madeira, this is the one. Every single step is an adventure. It is suggested to start with the Levadas and climb to the Levada on the rough road. Walking down is better done on concrete - except that the rough road (half way) is completely exposed to the sun - no shade and it's an endless climb.

Really cool hike! Hard and very dangerous in some places so don't go here with kids or dogs. Would also recommend to check the weather first, we walked the whole day in the rain which made it even more dangerous with all the wet rocks to climb on, and the vegetation is really dense in some places so we ended up soaking wet. Also most of the time we missed out on the views cause of all the clouds, but you can tell that in good weather it would be amazing! Would definitely recommend this hike if you're in for a bit of a challenge, but not if you are afraid of heights ;) a headlamp would be good, one of the tunnels is 800m long

There are construction works on the trail and there is a lot of mud (July 2019), it is very dense (machete with you), but beautiful. The tunnels are long, but they can walk with a mobile phone.

Fantastic trail with a wide mix of terrain and levels. First part is very easy. Second half gets more technical and hilly. Bring a headlamp for all the tunnels! Stunning views!

Unfortunately I only walked a couple of miles before giving up. The amount of water along the small tunnels was impossible to wade with normal trekking shoes. Too bad because this Trail is wonderful and I would like to try again as soon as possible.
