This pedestrian route is a small circular route that begins and ends in the place of João Bom, parish of Pilar da Brittany. The route begins on the regional road, in front of the coffee shop "O Lavrador" and follows the street in front of the cafe, descends about 80m, and turn left into a street where you will find a mini market where you can buy groceries to make the route. Continuing on, you will find a Hermitage on the left and, shortly after, a path on the right called "Rua da Relvinha". Enter this path and continue straight ahead towards the coastal zone. After about 600 m you will find a pasture to your left and, crossing it, you will enter a footpath as it follows along the cliff. In this way there are several species of the endemic flora, being to emphasize the Heather, the Tamujo, the white Pau, the Malfurada and the Milkweed. The avifauna in this section is also very rich, justifying the classification of "Important Zone for Birds" (IBA), being possible to observe Milhafres, Goldfinches, Rock Pigeons, Wood Pigeons, Finches and Garajaus in the areas closest to the sea. The foot path ends in a water catchment area, where you can enjoy a little rest and enjoy the beautiful view of the coast. After passing this area, you will enter a dirt road that slowly ascends towards João Bom. On this section, looking back, you can see the coast of Brittany, as well as several colonies of Garajaus by the sea. Continuing the route you will come to a fork where you should turn left. The path on the right gives access to the parish of the Mosteiros. Moving forward, will go around the Pico de Mafra as you can see on the map, and will follow the rest of the route on a dirt track to the starting point of the route.

Wow! Fantastic views along the coast for the 1st half of the hike. 2nd half is on farming roads through fields and lush valleys. This route is easy to do in reverse if it’s busy (it was for us).

First to Review

The trail was awesome. Very well marked. The bus dropped us at the trail head then we had a coffee at the mini market and headed out. Steep but not a problem. Well taken care of. Steps in good shape.
