This trail begins and ends in the town of Furnas and takes around 3 h. The route begins in Três Bicas and continues on through this area until it begins to climb on a tarmac road that leads to Lagoa das Furnas. Following the signs carefully you will reach Caldeiras da Lagoa which is about 2.5 km into the trail. You will often see tourists here watching local inhabitants use the high temperatures in the ground to cook traditional dishes. The trail continues along the lakeside, circling the lake on an easily accessible beaten earth path. After about 3 kms walking you will reach the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, built in the nineteenth century in Gothic style. Then continue along the edge of the stoned paved regional road for about 1.5 km until you come to a turning to your right that leads down to the town of Furnas. Continue along this route and in 30 m you will reach the end of the trail.

As described by others. Flat for the most part, beautiful scenery on most of the trail. We found the trail head in town on the “Old Church” Street. Well marked all along the loop. The surprise was the 3 euro per person charge to walk by the Caldeira...attempted to no avail to argue that we were simply walking the loop, we were told parking was free (we had parked in the village so did not have a car to park :) ). Paid the 6 euro and continued our walk.

Beautiful flat and easy trail around the interesting crater lake. Park museum has a nice cafe and a 3-euro exhibit which is well worth it for science or ecology buffs.

The lake is very peaceful and scenic, and the trail around it is a nice walk. I could not, even after studying the official trail instructions on the sign in the town of Furnas, figure out how to start this hike in town. And I was not the only one, because there was a woman trying unsuccessfully to get instructions from a resident. So, in the end, we both did what everyone does, and drove up the road to the developed area by the volcanic boiling pools and paid 2 euros to park. If you want to do the loop around the lake in the counter-clockwise direction you will be walking on the road for quite a ways at the end, so I just went out to the hermitage and back. I did not do my research and so tragically did not know that you can go about another mile to a waterfall on the Salto do Rosal trail. I'm sure there are places to park and experience this area without paying, if you are so inclined.

Nice flat trail around the lake. TIP: walk clockwise around the lake to avoid paying a 2 uro entrance fee (which they charge at the entrance to the mineral hot springs)

Very nice path around the lake. Part of it is on a path next to the road but most of it is pedestrian only. The part from the church to the hot springs was specially nice, nice trail and plenty of trees.

A pleasant walk in November with only 1 small car on the back of the lake. The high view point is reached only by a narrow vehicle road. Easy bus rise to Furnas from Ponta Delgada.

You walk on the same road that you drive to the trail. As a matter of fact it is not a trail but a road walk all way long. Easy, flat walk but I think other places are more beautiful on the island and deserve to have more time than this walk.

Grandma friendly and pretty. Park at the lake and add the gardens. Nothing but cow pasture or busy rode if you start your hike in town

Half of the way is on the road with cars. It's better to do half way and go back. You won't see anything new on this half. I am really disappointed because of this car-road trails all over the island. They have high reviews but if you have something to compare to, it is 1-2 stars. Why you call this a trail if I can drive my small car on it? I don't even need SUV.

Nice easy hike around a beautiful lake. Lovely views all around and an abandoned chapel about half-way. Calderas and thermal springs are interesting as well. Love Vale Das Furnas and São Miguel!!!
