NOTE: The government of Peru has placed restrictions on visitation to the ruins. There are a few ways to reach Machu Picchu--by train, by the Inca Trail, or by a combination of both and through the KM 104 Trail. Take your pick! If you opt by foot, both of those treks are with the help of guides. If you get in by train, there is a bus that will take you to the entrance gates from Aguas Calientes. Tourists have a maximum of 4 hours of visitation to ensure a steady flow of traffic. There are three types of entries and times (subject to change): Machu Picchu only ($70 USD for foreign tourists): 6 am to 12 pm 12 pm to 5:30 pm Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ($86 USD for foreign tourist): 6 am to 1 pm (entrance to Huayna from 7 am to 8 am) 6 am to 2 pm (entrance to Huayna from 10 am to 11 am) Machu Picchu + Mountain ($86 USD for foreign tourist): 6 am to 2 pm (entrance to Machu Picchu Mountain from 7 am to 8 am) 6 am to 3 pm (entrance to Machu Picchu Mountain from 9 am to 10 am)

BackpackingGreat!

Amazing steep trail and stairs with great view of the Machu Picchu ruins and Aguas Calientes. My friend and I hiked this mountain from Aguas Calientes and hiked all the way back down. Overall, I enjoyed the trek to Montania Machu Picchu. The view was expectacular.

Definitely hike the mountain first aka inca stair master. It's paved all the way and exposed to sunlight, but so bring plenty of water, and no bathrooms as well. Enjoy lunch and make you're way back to explore the rest of the site. You can by the time you're done, and all crowds will have left, and but if you take too long some areas may be closed off already.

This trail is all stairs ALL THE WAY. Pace yourself. Slow and steady is key here. Beautiful views of Machu Picchu throughout the trail. It took us about 2.5 hours to finish. I highly recommend this hike for anyone up for a challenge. It did rain on our way down which made the rocks very slippery. So make sure to bring a rain jacket and wear shoes with good tread.

We left later than most and avoided the 7am slot. We instead toured the ruins with our awesome guide Elisban from Trexperience first thing in the morning. We got great photos inside the ruins while the fog was still out, and after the tour did this hike. It was hotter but the trail was much quieter. We were told it would take around 3 hours. 2 up and 1 down. That didn’t account for the 30 minutes resting, eating, and soaking in the incredible views! Can’t wait to do the other mountain next time around!

A lot of stairs, but 100% worth it. You're probably only going to get the opportunity once. Might as well do it.

Based on the photos here, I’m interpreting this as the Machu Picchu Mountain. First, if you only have a single four hour pass, skip this hike. It took us nearly three hours. We had a pass with one re-entry. You must enter between 7-8, you sign-in on a numbered ledger and sign back out at the end. This was truly a difficult hike! Remember the altitude may affect you especially compared to those hikes at home that you just kick out. Take your time, enjoy the views, drink your water. Breathtaking (literally!) views and an amazing accomplishment. The trail was dry and well maintained, but steep inclines, large rocks and irregular ‘steps’ but truly an experience of a lifetime!

Most difficult trail I have ever hiked. Our guide said there are 2000+ steps each way. It was very cloudy so we couldn’t really see much, but had one great view coming back down. There are also 2 very scary areas, especially if you have a fear of heights. I was hugging the way and going slow. Coming down I went feet first. If you are doing this I recommend climbing with no pack or a very small pack. Make sure you are good with lots of stairs.

Note that to enter this trail (or any segment of the Inca trail), you must have a certified guide with you. Good trail to the top of Machu Picchu. Repeated switchbacks tend to get a bit monotonous, but lots of cool flora makes up for it. You get a clear view of the Urubamba river valley on the way up. If you’re starting from the Inca rail from Aguascalientes, be careful to get off at the correct kilometer marker, as some entrances to the trail may be closed. The trail is very strenuous, which, when combined with the altitude, means you’ll have to take lots of rests if you aren’t prepared.

The hike is wonderful and the view is absolutely sublime. Just be warned, this mountain does not care about your feelings and punished you thousands of incredibly steep stairs. It goes up until you think it doesn’t, then goes up even more. Still worth it though!

First to Review

We started at 9:00 am with decent shade 1st half after then some open spaces with amazing views. We took multiple pictures to capture moments. No bugs except at the top. Fairly long trail with lots of steps that took us 1hr 20 min to get up and 1hr down. From local: not as step or dangerous as Huyana trail but twice as long. Again amazing views at multiple locations
