NOTE: The government of Peru has placed restrictions on visitation to the ruins. There are a few ways to reach Machu Picchu--by train, by the Inca Trail, or by a combination of both and through the KM 104 Trail. Take your pick! If you opt by foot, both of those treks are with the help of guides. If you get in by train, there is a bus that will take you to the entrance gates from Aguas Calientes. In 2019, tourists have a maximum of 4 hours of visitation to ensure a steady flow of traffic. There are three types of entries and times (subject to change): Machu Picchu only ($70 USD for foreign tourists): 6 am to 12 pm 12 pm to 5:30 pm Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ($86 USD for foreign tourist): 6 am to 1 pm (entrance to Huayna from 7 am to 8 am) 6 am to 2 pm (entrance to Huayna from 10 am to 11 am) Machu Picchu + Mountain ($86 USD for foreign tourist): 6 am to 2 pm (entrance to Machu Picchu Mountain from 7 am to 8 am) 6 am to 3 pm (entrance to Machu Picchu Mountain from 9 am to 10 am)

took the entrance from Ollantaytambo which directed us from the city. to get to the sun gate was a total of 5.4 miles and the trail splits a few times. make sure you continue to go up and not try to take any of the easier routes. The Inca Quarries are maybe 1 mile away from the Sun gate and you will wonder where it is. I recommend Google mapping the trek before going. From the city of Ollantaytambo it was +1,2000 ft incline. it took us about 4.5 hours to get to the sun gate (we stopped a lot for the group) but only 1.5 hours down. There is a route to go straight down and take a bus back to the city.

Absolutely a must. The view of the MP site is amazing. It’s a gradual incline all the way up. If you sit down on top, don’t dangle your feet off the walls, it’s causing deterioration of the walls. The ranger on duty doesn’t speak English, he’s trying his best to tell people nicely. Also leave no traces, it’s mind boggling that tourists still throw their trash along the trails of one of the 7th marvel of the world.

We had a beautiful day as we entered the sun gate. Seeing Machu Picchu for the first time is indescribable. As you follow the trail to approach Machu Picchu it gets better and better

After being in Machu Picchu itself, which was sooo breathtaking, this was a great way to finish the day. Spectacular views with a different perspective on the citadel. Well worth it.

Wear sturdy shoes for this very nice walk up to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu. The views of the valley and the site are awesome. Took us about an hour up and half that down, very glad we took the trail.

Hiked up to the sun gate after we came back down from Huayna Picchu. My legs were jelly to start with and I thought it would just be a little, short walk to the sun gate. Wrong. Slow and steady uphill most of the way with steeper bits and though and it takes about 45 min to an hour to get there (had to take a break or 5 lol). It was much quieter up there and it was a beautiful hike! Totally recommend.

Did the 4 day hike back when it wasn't so touristy. Hear it's getting very overrun by tourists....

Macchu PIcchu gets 5 stars, and the masses of tourists get 2 stars. Impressive and beautiful, but looks like it's becoming a real tourist trap. Much more enjoyable hanging out up at the Sun Gate and watching folks (especially the porters) come through. Amazing views of high forest. Makes you wonder what else is hiding out undiscovered.
