Slieve Binnian Summit Tor and North Tor is a 6.7 mile loop trail located near Newry, Down, Northern Ireland that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking.
This is a half day loop hike starting and finishing in Carrick Little car park that takes in the Summit Tor and North Tor. This hike features some excellent views of the Annalong Wood and valley, as well as fantastic views of the Silent Valley Reservoir and Ben Crom. Follow the road from the car park north and cross a stile at a gate. The Mourne Wall is on your left. Follow the wall steeply upwards. You pretty much stick to the wall for most of the accent. As you approach the summit Tor stay to the right hand side of the wall, as this is the easiest approach to the Summit Tor. Walk around the summit to get the best views. Leave the summit and head north towards the North Tor. The trail down continues to the left of this rock to the saddle between Binnian and Slievelamagan. At the saddle turn right, do not accend Slievelamagan. This trail will swing around and eventually you will see Annalong Wood on your left. Follow the wood back to the car park.
Get to Carrick Little car park early as it fills fast. There is parking on the road, but this is not ideal.
Started from little carrick car park at 12 and finished at 4.00. Tougher than I expected, tackled the loop walk by following stoney path on way up and returning following wall. Deserted today, only met 7 people in 4 hrs! Very icy on way up, but a lovely hike. Stopped overlooking lake and then onwards to North tor, hard work indeed. When I got to top the wind was probably force 7, glad there were no cliff paths. Following wall on way down was a chore, conditions poor lots of snow, ice, v strong winds, approx - 6 windchill Every step had to be taken carefully as snow was covering most of terrain. Bad news if you hurt yourself in these conditions! Would not do this trail again in these conditions on my own. You could say I enjoyed the challenge rather than had an enjoyable hike.
From midway up it was very slippy with frozen pack snow. Upper levels there was a bit more grip on the snow but still quite difficult and dangerous without correct clothing and boots.
great wee trail. done it clockwise this time which we prefered. got the main climb done 1st at the start. Meant we had the trail for easier walking when coming back in later when tired and sore. Weather was cracking which always helps with outstanding views
Great trail, lots to see, medium difficulty, very exposed and windy
A really fabulous trek - did the clockwise route -very easy to follow trails - steep and challenging enough initial climb but rewarded with spectacular views at top of reservoirs and followed by a beautiful walk down past woodlands and streams and blue Lough on the return!
