Tatare Tunnels Track is a 2.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Whataroa, West Coast, New Zealand that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round.

September 30, 2020good little hike. We didn't go until the end of tunnel because it's writed close but still good to discover the first part. some glow worm in the tunnel, think to turn off your light sometimes and adapt your eyes few seconds :)
September 26, 2020Definitely need good footwear and a decent torch. some easier parts than others. the single shingle track towards the end is steep but the effort is so worth it. Went on a day that a storm was due to hit, so quite wet. A lovely walk.
June 5, 2020the walk itself was fine, the end result a little disappointing. dont get me wrong you can go through the cave but it is blocked off at the end of the cave so you literally get to the end and then turn around again.
June 4, 2020The trail is open, only at the very end of the tunnel there’s a sign saying the path is closed. There was a little stream on the ground of the tunnel after a day of heavy rain, but it was fine to walk in the water (feet got a little wet though). Other than that, a cool short hike and we saw glow worms at the very end of the tunnel!
March 10, 2020February 26, 2020Easy hike with gradual elevation changes along a river that is fun to explore on its own as well. The tunnel at the end of the trail is open to enter but is closed at the exit on the other side requiring you to exit the way you came in. Bring waterproof shoes and a flashlight of some kind for the tunnel as it used to be an aqueduct and a shallow pool of cold water covers most of the tunnel floor.
February 5, 2020Small collection of glow worms in the tunnel which was cool. Waterproof boots recommended as water is ankle deep inside the tunnel. Can also go barefoot but rocks could cause discomfort
October 31, 2019forget about the tunnel... we started the walk with our kids (7/9) by sunset, got wet feet in the tunnel as expected and found finally lots of glowworms and an possum in the forest on the way back

January 2, 2019It's a little hike, but a fun one. Tunnel is fun and you get to see some light glow worm action. Bring sturdy footwear that you don't mind getting soaked. Tunnel has a stream running through it the entire time that is ankle deep.
