Okarito Beach Trail to Kohuamarua Bluff is a 6.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Whataroa, West Coast, New Zealand that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.
We only had time to do the track along the bluff, not the beach walk because we went to the trig at Kohuamarua summit (179m). When we left the lovely trail to go to the Kohuamarua summit there was a lot of kiekie but we found a spur with none on it. First up there was a strip of pink tape which indicated a lizard motel (2 tiles placed offset for gaps with a rock on top so the lizards can hide safely from predators). We got to the trig via a subtle animal trail and were surprised to see it had been sawn through all 4 legs and was lying on the ground. Maybe this is to avoid confusion with the Okarito trig which is much smaller but have a fantastic view of Okarito Lagoon. On the day, the mountains were clouded over though. I'll be back to do the complete circuit sometime.
I wasn't crazy about this trail. it was rather boring... an old logging road along the cliff to the beach. Ocean views were few. The highlight was spotting several blue mushrooms, as featured on the $50 bill. They were on the Trig trail on the right going up to the lookout.
