This hike is a scramble to the summit. It is definitely a hard hike using your whole body to climb up roots. There is a glacier river (drinkable) about 30-45mins out. Bring plenty of water and good hiking shoes. Be prepared for lots of deep muddy spots towards the summit. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/west-coast/places/westland-tai-poutini-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/mount-fox-route/

car park is currently closed due to flooding. If you wish to hike the mountain you'll have to start from the glacier carpark. The trail may also be closed temporarily as I didn't check.

Hard track which requires to actually climb sometimes but great reward with views on Fox glacier, Mt Cook, Mt Abel. Brilliant hike but long and challenging. You need to be quite fit and used to do long hike too.

Epic hike. Way more challenging than Alex Knob, but views of Fox Glacier equally good. There are many sections where you have to climb up roots and use your whole body to pull yourself up. Absolutely worth it though.

This hike was an all out scramble to the summit. It is definitely a hard hike using your whole body to climb up roots. There is a glacier river (drinkable) about 30-45mins out which came as a blessing on our hike back down on the mountain as we ran out of water on the hike back down. Bring plenty of water and good hiking shoes. Be prepared for lots of deep muddy spots towards the summit. We were able to see Fox Glacier briefly before large cloud coverage overtook the summit. It took our group 7.5hrs out and back. Absolutely worth it and such a fun hike.

Very steep but extremely fun! Get ready to pull yourself up roots and rocks the whole way. A review I read called it "human 4 wheel drive" which I'd agree with. We went on a somewhat cloudy day and managed to see Fox Glacier peek through the clouds after waiting at the summit for a while. Start early and hope for no clouds! There was water in tarns at the top, but be prepared to treat it.

It’s extreme steep! Take care, high fitness level only. But the walk was so much fun, we took 5.5 hours to complete. Maybe take desinfection or cloves with you, you need all 4 hands and feet; sometimes there is snow at the top. It could be muddy instead if you go after a rainy night.

The sign say 8 hours. The woman at DOC office say 6 h, we made it 4,5 h. It's more like a climb then a hike. I thought it was really funny and you get a good wiev about the mountain and ocean. Would do this one again. It's really hard hike, but fun

First to Review

I would not classify this as a moderate hike! It was a very difficult hike that was very steep. It was a climb requiring all four limbs much of the time. We were given some bad advice from the DOC i-site, the guide said this was a good backpacking trail for an overnight stay. The 3 hours we were able to complete were grueling and we had another 1,000 ft to go to make it to the summit. There were no good places to set up a tent as far as the eye could see. There were, however, many beautiful views from the 1020m indicator. All night long we could hear the rushing Fox River down below. This was a demanding, yet satisfying trail. It takes the full 8 hours to complete. Believe the sign!
