Fox Glacier South Side Walk is a 4.2 mile out and back trail located near Whataroa, West Coast, New Zealand that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking.
Follow the south bank of the Fox River, through rainforest, to come to a glacier viewpoint.
Great walk on an easy walking well maintained track. Found some of signage a bit confusing though. There was a sign on the right on the way up that said 30 minutes to a Moraine which we mistook for an out and back track. Wrong. It actually loops around and reconnects with the main track further up. Well worth the diversion just don't do what we did and enter it at wrong point or you'll end up doing extra walking. Refer recording to view our mistake.
This should be the very first hike you do! It's small and introductory to the rain forrest around you in the Southern Alps. Don't even both if you've already been to Franz Joseph because you'll be disappointed. It is completely surrounded by forrest (which is boring but some find "boring")and the views are not much but you see a bit of the glacier.
the view that you get isn't that great. but it's pretty much the best you can get due to the many years of receding glacier.
Assez facile à parcourir, le chemin est plaisant à découvrir mais toutefois un peu redondant... sous la pluie et beaucoup de nuage il a été impossible d'apercevoir le glacier mais le paysage reste très beau
The Fox Glacier South Side Walk follows the south bank of the Fox River through ancient podocarp rainforest. Was an easy hike and worth the beautiful view of the forest.
Glacier was somewhat disappointing but the turn off to pass through the rainforest was v nice
