highly recommend starting at Pukerua Bay - the ton of steps seems a lot easier than the steep, stoney incline if you start from Paekakariki! beautiful hike

Frequently do this track from both ends to change it up. Great views....good opportunity to get vitamin D....swing bridges are local made and very safe

Well maintained trail and challenging. I did from the South end to the northern end. All good as long as you don't mind heights and swing bridges.

Very well maintained track, beautiful views and a good work out for your legs. Walked from Paekakariki to Pukerua Bay which is the direction to do for less stair climbing.

Excelentes vistas. Verificar muy bien las condiciones del viento pues en áreas es muy fuerte. Nuestrx hijx de 6 años pudo hacer la caminata, depende si son activxs y acostumbran a hacer caminatas.

BackpackingGreat!

Good and beautiful walk. Amazing view from the top, 2 swing bridges which was nice and can see South Island from the top on a nice day. Getting there you can catch train from wellington and get down either in Pukurua bay (if you fit because there s a lot of steps to climb from this end) or at paekakariki station. or drive and park at the station and climb and catch the train back. Never go on a windy day.

It’s a wonderful track you will enjoy walk with enough resting points. If you are fit to walk try from Pukerua Bay side. So you are going up to the steps. It’s not that hard walk. 3 to 4 hours with enough rest, photo and Video sessions.

Great trail. Can get tricky in parts. Narrow step paths and swing bridges will make it tricky for those with anxiety at heights. Plenty of rest stops and photo opportunities. Recommend walking north to south at the path seems a little easier that way. We left our car at Pukerua Bay train station, took the train to paekakariki and walked back. Not sure I would have been keen to wait for the return train.

Don’t let the hard scary you, it is not that hard. It took us 3 hours as we took photos, got rest at top, if not probably 2 and half hour can finish it. The view is amazing, if you like hiking, this one you can’t miss

Loved this walk today the weather was fantastic. Went in from the Paekakariki end which I think was a good decision. Lots of steps up if you do it South to North. Enjoyed a coffee in Paekakariki before we set off. Took us 2 3/4 hrs station to station.

Great little track. Don’t let the “Hard” rating deter you. I’d say it’s more of a moderate track. Lots of steep sections along the cliff side with incredible views. We started in Paekakariki. You get the large hill over with early and there’s less bottleneck on the way up. You also get an incredible view of the South Island and Kapiti Island on the descent. The rest of the way after the initial climb is smooth rolling hills. Remember to bring cash if you plan on catching the train back to Paekakariki.

It was a good day for the walk. Although the track was narrow with minor slips it's well worth doing. I did it from Pukurea Bay to Paekakriki as you can get something to eat and drink there. An early start especially at weekends means you you only see a few people.

Narrow and prone to slips, good footwear needed. What a thrill! Loved it! The steep cliff down from the track is thrilling scenery and we caught a stunning day! Husband and I walked with a 15kg toddler backpack and our 2 year old loved the sheep, cows, rabbits, falcons and seagulls we saw along the way. A pretty decent mid-section (3.5-6k Pukerua start), climbing steeply (but it’s steeper in the reverse direction) but the rest was a @n easy & wonderful walk provided you have decent footwear. Very rocky and crumbly, narrow and prone to slips. Great day out with the family. It took us 6 hours!! But that’s including the stops for toddler, and lugging the extra weight. We caught the train back right on sunset, it was a real treat :)

This is an amazingly beautiful trail on a sunny day - well worth the trip up from Welly! i don’t suggest going on a wet or windy day since it is mad steep in some places. If you are taking the train, the trail begins/ends at the Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay stations - you can walk either way but unless you are a glutton for punishment or really fit, I suggest starting at the Paekakariki end.

Yeah was awesome day, lots of traffic, until my partner slipped on loose gravel and broke her ankle and had to get the Helicopter In to get her out haha. Wear sturdy shoes. Unluggy as.
