Hiking

Much nicer walking back, we left at 0630 and had nice cloud cover on the way back making it easier to walk over the exposed Ridge. Managed to cut approx 1.5 hours off travel time on the way back.

HikingGreat!

Lovely walk, first 4km in the Bush and then it opens up with incredible views as you head up to the peak hight of 1591m at the 8km mark. Definitely hard work getting to that as first 8km mostly all up hill. Then a nice gentle trip starting to descend down to the hut. The last 2km before the hut is a decent drop and the hut been 1114ms high approx.

Hiking

Return hike from Waipakihi hut back to start of track. Overlooks Ruapehu, Ngaruahoe, Tongariro and Lake Taupo. The track climbs steeply from the hut through beech forest to the treeline. From there it follows a poled route back along the Umukarikari Range (summit 1561 m) before steadily descending to the carpark.

Trail through scrub up to volcanic tussocks overlooking Ruapehu, Ngaruahoe, Tongariro and Lake Taupo. The track climbs steadily through beech forest to the treeline. From there it follows a poled route along the Umukarikari Range (summit 1561 m) before dropping down to Waipakihi Hut. It's popular with hunters as well as trampers.
