Description
Waypoints (0)

To get to the start of the walk head out of Taupo on State Highway 5 towards Napier, go through the new roundabout and turn in about 3 k’s off at Mountain Road on your left hand side. The views are spectacular and well worth the hard slog. Doing the first part over the farmland is not so exciting but once up into the bush there are some great sections.

Very nice trail, steady incline. Happy I’ve read the review below , the track is overgrown and lots of bugs.

Very very overgrown. I do this track every time I’m in Taupo and it was like bush whacking! Always worth it for the view at the top but wow could have done without the branches everywhere. Heaps of bugs too (2 less now after I swallows them!)

Did this walk today! Total distance was 7.5km and an elevation gain of 581m... The description states that this is a 6km walk, which it might be if you start tracking from the forest to the summit. Just keep in mind that from the car park to the forest is quite a steep incline and isn't included in the distance. Took us 2.5 hours up and back. Good walk though, quite narrow in places :)

Trail was good - bit rough due to weather. Hard on knees coming down but views from top were awesome.

The trail is rugged but clear and well maintained. Not too steep. The moss covered trees are enchanting. Unfortunately when I was at the top there was lots of mist, but from the little I could see, the view would be rewarding on a nice day.

Easier than expected. Track a little rough, but our 5 year old made it up and back no problem. Stunning views at the top.

Definitely gets your heart rate up Worth the climb, once getting to that top view, carry on about 50m down a trail to go closer to the mountains. Take layers in your backpack- I had a thermal, jersey and beanie and I still got cold at the top (sunny day in July) id take gloves next time. Unfortunately I didn’t see or hear any birds.

Not that difficult. Fantastic view at the top, the rise is just a bit boring.

Awesome trail, challenging run/walk that took 45 mins. The first 10 mins are across farmland and then you hit the bush. Would be cautious after heavy rain as the track looks like it may slip about 3/4 of the way up at some stage in future. Take warm clothing for the way down in autumn/winter even if you’re running. Awesome views that are worth the effort.

Great trail. We were concerned from the number of cars that it might be crowded but after a large school group passed us coming down we had this beautiful trail to ourselves. Challenging but worth it.
