Track mostly follows an old gold mining rail line so is pretty flat. Very scenic with a couple of bridges across the river and a long tunnel to ride through.

WalkingGreat!

Easy flat walk. We continued onto Waikino and the Victoria Battery site, easy flat gravel path (there and back about 14km) also included the Owharoa Falls.

Simple paved, but damp and chilly old brick rail tunnel.

Mountain bikingGreat!

Did this track as part of the Hauraki Rail Trail ride starting from Paeroa to Karangahake Gorge. Lovely mix of stops including river, bridge, tunnel, gold mining site and Owharoa waterfalls, ! Easy bike ride totally recommend as a day trip from Auckland.

Easy trail, we walked through the tunnel and carried on to Waikino then came back the other way(no tunnel). Beautiful scenic route on the way back.

Really great - it’s a loop not an out and back! You can go either way but I recommend you start at the Karangahake car park then cross the bridge and turn left towards the windows walk then follow the railway tunnel signs along the river. If you go this way you can pop into the vineyard at the end of the long tunnel for a quick wine or sparkling honey mead before you finish the final 15 mins of the trail!

I wouldn't come here JUST for this trail, but the tunnel is absolutely worthwhile, especially when combined with the Windows trail and other sites in the area. The tunnel has fantastic echo and you can get some phenomenal pictures from inside

Huge amount to do in this area. Dont miss the 'windows' walk through old gold mining tunnels and explore the stamping battery site just a few hundred meters off the highway over the new swing bridge.

Easy walk! Kid friendly and bikes allowed! Don’t need a torch as there is small lamps all the way threw the tunnel now.

Great walk if you include a loop back on the other side of the Gorge. Why go back the same way. The loop trail is marked. Nice and cool in the tunnel.
