Great hike or climb. More than 1100 steps up, it’s well shaded. There's a beautiful little waterfall towards the bottom of the stairs. Great workout for a day. Trail is well maintained. The summit has a great view of the Waikato.
First timers walking the summit this morning. Started at 7am and was fairly busy with early morning runners and walkers. We had a rest at the half way point and then kept going. Struggled at around 1300 stairs but a lady kindly told me 84 to go!!! Was hard work but a lovely day to be in the bush and the best way to start the day. Going down a joy !!
we walked up the southern track .which started with steps and then lead into a steep climb over trees and tree roots 2.5 hrs was the stated time .we completed in 1.5 hrs .we exited by the hakaramata steps and walked along the Waingaro Road back to our car .all up lots of steps and only a view up the top .The northern track and the Kauri Loop Track offer good views with similar conditions
Best sub-one hour running/climbing workout. Always plenty of people training on here. Keep an eye out for runners and etiquette is to give way to those going faster. Climb from waterfall to summit lookout is 1400 stairs there are ear-tag counters every 100 steps. If it isn’t hard enough for you pack a sugar bag with gravel from the pile at the entrance and carry it up - just leave it trackside wherever you want and the track guardians will spread it out
