Would say this is medium fitness, as many people in the group were struggling.

no parks alot of tourists quite frustrating

Not easy, even though it is almost all paved, lots of elevation and stairs. But very beautiful. Low tide is best, allows you through the tunnel.

Nice well maintained and very popular walk. Make sure you take the time to do the Stingray and Gemstone Bays (take snorkel & flippers to Gemstone). Reminds you how lucky we are in NZ.

Description for this location not correct. Difficulty Level should be listed as Moderate, Many steep elevation changes, paved inclines and many steps, that make this a challenge. Also, this is not a Loop track; it's a there and back. The distance and elevation change is also much more than listed since the start point listed is not the place you can park at; must park at the beach car park 1.5 Km away and hike up trail or park is town's entrance and pay $5NZ per person to ride a bus to the tracks stating point. With that said, the views were amazing - of ocean, distant mountains, jungle, forest, grasslands, and although the hike is a challenge to views along the way and of the secluded beach, caves and Cove are worth the effort. Check for low tide schedule for Cathedral Cove and plan your hike to be there at that time in order to walk through the coves arch. Take a camera. We left at 6:45am and there were already 8 other people on the trail. Starts getting more trafficked after 9am when shuttle service begins. Forewarning- Although the trail is paved from the listed start point to the beach Cove incline, People with mobility issues will not be able to make it down the many steep steps to the beach Cove itself. The nature track from the car park to the listed starting point is not paved and requires either walking in some sandy places and natural wooded pathways (or could take the sidewalk along the road to the top and start point).

Easy walk with lots of people

A difficult walk in parts with it being steep very often. However, great walk with nice views of the water and islands and through the forests providing much needed shade. Beautiful beach and cove at the end but dont forget the long walk back.

We did this hike starting from the North End of Hahei beach, there are little sign posts all the way along so its super easy to find!

Like others say, it’s busy, but we took a shuttle up around 5p, and with the hike taking “45 mins” (without relaxing and taking pictures) would have been rushed to take shuttle back. We walked it back to the parking lot and stayed past 6p down at the cove—which was worth it because most people had left to get the last shuttle ! Can’t beat seeing (in person) the cover snapshot of the newest north island NZ lonely planet book !

Came here 25 years ago and had the beach to ourselves. Not the case anymore, a lot of people. Walking track is nice, its paved. The walk down and back is worth it. Take one of the buses from the bottom of the road to the trail head. You will not get a park at the top unless you are super early.

I visited Cathedral Cove in mid-January as a stop on an adventure tour I was on. Expect to take this hike with several new "friends" -- it was SO crowded (lots of families)! Beautiful ocean views make up for the lackluster path for most of the walk. There's a steep hill before you reach the beach, which only feels troublesome on the return with your sandy feet. The arch-cave is magnificent and even though the beach cove is riddled with people, it somehow retains a secluded feeling. I'm glad I saw this, but mixed on whether I need to return.

Hike is longer than you think, 45 min one way. But the caves are cool. Heavily visited by tourists via hiking, water taxis, and kayaking. Bring water on a hot day.

This is a great trail! We did this in February of 2015. Lots of hills but still great. My 3 yr old did alright, it's hard to tell if she was really tired or just wanted her uncle's attention so she kept asking him to carry her. But she did manage almost all of the trail. Beautiful place with a great reward, the cove is breathtaking!
