Great trail and almost all paved. There is quite a bit of up and down, and a ton of stairs at the very end so those with knee issues should beware. If you continue on the shore, there is an old rope swing, too, that you can see from the hillside. The info center is a good stop if coming from the beach because there is shade, restrooms, and food/ice cream trucks. This is also where the public transit has a stop. The beach is quite a bit rockier here, though so just a heads’ up. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/coromandel/places/hahei-area/tracks/cathedral-cove-walk/

the trail itself is blacktop most.of the way. There are a few steps near the cove itself. There are couple.of.good.clinbs along the way. There is access to the trail from the end of Hahei beach. This is a beautiful additional mile to the walk This is an incredibly beautiful beach, and an enjoyable walk.

Nature tripsGreat!

Did this hike in April 2019, was mostly paved and had a few hills which made it a little challenging in the heat. Highly recommend taking the shuttle from town up to the trailhead or else you’ll have to walk up a very steep road to begin your journey. The beach was such a beautiful payoff! Super crowded though.

Did this at dusk a couple years ago, beat the heat and the sunset at the cove was amazing. Lots of stairs at the end, steady going otherwise

The challenging hike is so worth the view! You can cliff dive from on of the rocks and we swam to a hidden side cave. Such a scenic place to explore and enjoy for the day!

Easy walk while glancing at the Sunrise. Watched the Sun rise above the sea at Cathedral Cove. Stunning View.

very well paved, only moderate fitness required due to hills. paid $15 to park great coastal views throughout completed the walking portion in nearly half of the time at decent pace Recommend seeing the cove 2-3 hours before or after low tide when its most quiet!

Extremely well formed path but surprisingly challenging. The beach is the main attraction and is worth sweating it for. Have been in summer when it’s packed, but shared with just two other groups in mid winter and enjoyed it a lot more this time! Might switch it up and get the water taxi next time I’m in the area.

Good variety of scenery -- beach, forest, rolling hillside -- for a relatively short hike. You can skip the Gem spur, nothing special down there except wet rocks, flies, and some signs about snorkeling. The Stingray spur is worthwhile for a quiet scenic cove. Lots of scenic views of the beach/rock formations/islands along the way

Cathedral Cove is a must visit while in NZ. Trail is paved with stairs at some points but well worth the hike in as this is an amazing beach! Family friendly but there are sections of stairs, competed this with a 5 and 7 year old and they made it through ok.

Great trail and almost all paved. There is quite a bit of up and down, and a ton of stairs at the very end so those with knee issues should beware. I recommend starting from Hahei Beach rather than either of the car parks (one at the top of the hill where the restrooms and info center are, and another on up). Just past the trailhead, if you continue on the shore, there is an old rope swing, too, that you can see from the hillside. The info center was a good stop if coming from the beach because there is shade, restrooms, and food/ice cream trucks. This is also where the public transit has a stop. We added on the detours to Horse Leg and Stingray coves so we had more elevation and length than indicated here. Stingray specifically was awesome. Just as pretty as Cathedral Cove but much, much less crowded. The beach is quite a bit rockier here, though so just a heads’ up. Spent half a day just exploring this loop, and also saw a sign for an additional trail that I wish we had the time to check out (can’t remember the name right now but I will update if I find it).

Beautiful hike! The ocean and the variety of trees here were amazing. It was my first hike when I visited NZ, and it was one of my favorites! I didn't have any trouble finding a parking. I parked at Hahei Beach on a Saturday mid-morning. The hike took me about 2 hours round trip. I explored some side trails along the way. I recommend wearing closed toe shoes and bringing sandals for the beach. It was pretty busy. I was passing alot of families along the way, but the views are worth it.

I’d rate this as medium. It’s paved but is very hilly and some people in my group struggled with the inclines. Beautiful sand beach to hang out at and the cove had clear water. Expect to see a lot people as it’s a tourist destination. Wear shoes for the walk, and if it’s too hard for the return trek, there is a water taxi to take back which was a flat $15 to/from Hahei beach.

Walking

Beautiful walk along the coast and down the Cathedral Cove! If you are looking for free parking beforehand (if needed) there is a free carpark at the start of the town on the right, just a short walk to the start of this walk and the township.

Beautiful sights but often very busy. Best to go early in the morning. Quite a big hill to get back up at the end - there is a water taxi if swells are low that may be an option. Parking is tricky. Plan on taking the shuttle

Super nice trail. All paved and with stairs. Not accessible to those in wheelchairs. At the very least, wear tennis shoes. I wore hiking boots and have no regrets. Humidity is high. Wear sunscreen because the sun is very intense in New Zealand (less ozone to block the UV light vs the Northern Hemisphere). Bring water too because once you start on the trail, there’s no water fountains or shops. I parked at Hahei for free and took the shuttle bus for about $3.50 USD round trip.
