Excellent! It was a great introduction to the Great Walks of New Zealand. The second day is where you will encounter lots of mud. I highly suggest trekking poles to help navigate the mud. If you poke around there are plenty of hard objects to step on that you can't see that well. We had hiking shoes (low tops) and gaiters on and did not get any mud in our shoes and probably did not step in anything more than a few centimeters deep. North Arm is your most likely place to see a Kiwi. We heard them call about an hour after sun down to start foraging for the night, but unfortunately we did not actually see them. There are at least two pairs living close by.

The walk from Lee Bay to Port William was awesome on a sunny day. The rest was ok, with varying forest and a bit of history. Saw some deer and tuis/bellbirds, but alas no kiwi. Interesting people in the huts too. Got some wild weather at North Arm, just what I’d expect from the South Seas!

The mud at the start of the trail was an indication of what was to come on our longest hike day of the trip. It was deep in sections and hard to navigate in others

Beautiful hike but would probably just hike to Maori beach or port William and stay there for two nights next time, beautiful places and sand flies not so bad!

Was a great hike, and very doable for a day trip on Stewart Island. It took me 7.5 hours to finish. Some beautiful views and a variated walk through forest, beach and coast line. Definately worth the effort.

This was my first Great Walk and such a eye opener to what is out there. I was seven when completed it and although challenging, it was and fun experience.
