HikingGreat!

All uphill but a wide easy track though slushy snow at upper level. Fantastic views in all directions and beautiful tussock alpine landscape. Not hard but took longer than DOC's suggested 1 hour as quite steep in places. Very few walking.

Hiked the trail on the winter solstice. Beautiful conditions, with plenty of snow underfoot. Broke in new snowshoes, but didn't really need them as plenty of people (well 10-20) I passed going up or down were managing pretty well with just boots. Nevertheless they gave me the extra confidence to come down the trail at a reasonable pace. The trail itself is fine - I would classify it as medium for reasonably fit walkers. The views on a bluebird winters day are stunning. Great views of Aspiring, Wakatipu/Remarks, central Otago and into the Gibbston valley. Wanaka along with Cromwell very sitting under an inversion layer of cloud, which just added to the drama. Right up there with the best walks in the area.

Super cloudy and even snowing at the top (NZ summer!) but a wide and well maintained trail so no issues. Agree w other review that trail is more moderate than hard, but it’s steep. Clouds started to disperse on way down and showed us what we could have won - will be back on a clear day!

100% recommend this trail. Decided to do it on the spur of the moment after we pulled into the free campsite at the foot of the trail. Really glad we did - the views were fantastic the whole way and came across very few people en route. Much more relaxed than the crowds on some of the other trails. It is difficult in parts as it gets steep in places, but it evens out then and you get a nice mix of elevation so it isn't too challenging.

Nice relatively short hike to break up the drive between Queenstown and Wanaka. Starts at the very large Crown Saddle carpark, which is just as you reach the top of a set of hairpin switchbacks on the road from Queenstown. The trail goes considerably further to someplace called Touhys Saddle. You would do well to turn off and enjoy the scenery at the carpark even if you don't want to do the hike. You can look down on planes flying through the valley into Queenstown. Very cool. Definately more moderate than hard.
