We did this trail our first day in New Zealand and after a long trip from the U.S. it was a spectacular introduction to this beautiful country and a great way to get acclimated to the new time zone. It was certainly a challenge going up due to the grade and fairly well traveled by locals who would just zoom by you. The views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu were breathtaking and absolutely worth the treck up!!

A tough walk, but well worth it! The views from the top are stunning! The ascent is demanding, but okay if you take your time. And uphill one way means downhill the other way!

This is NOT an easy trail! It is basically straight uphill for the first part. My quads were killing me for the next four days. If you start in the town and walk to the trailhead like we did, it is crazy straight up. And in my opinion, a hiking trail should not be completely smoothed out of all the natural elements (i.e. rocks, etc). This makes it more difficult to climb a steep pitch. And far less interesting.
