Took the Gondola up and started from there. Took us 5h30 return (1h20 to the saddle and about 1h30-45 to the summit). It snowed the day before so it was really nice going up but when going down, the sun had melted most of the snow so it became really muddy/slippy.

Beautiful views with some occasional and welcome shade. The rating is accurate - hard - with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain per mile.

Amazing hike with a great view!

Great hike with amazing views of Queenstown and a 360 view at the top! your legs will feel it after this hike, in a good way.

I am 57 and hike a fair amount and in good shape with no injuries. I took the gondola up to the start point vs taking the Tiki Trail.

Note, the gondola starts at 9am or 10am depending on the season.

it took 1.75 hours to get to the saddle including picture stops. The trail is well-marked and mostly in the open so you can actually see where the trail is going to up ahead. it is mostly an incline all the way to the saddle with only a couple of flat spots. the trail is hard pack and worn with some loose rocks but very manageable. There is a small bench at the saddle that overlooks valleys and other peaks. also, it is very windy here at the saddle.

Another 45 minutes to the top. this part of the trail is a significant incline all the way and there are spots where you will need to step high or scramble over some rocks. if you have ever hiked Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale Arizona, this part of the hike will be no problem for you. the trail is easy to follow and, with the number of people on the trail, you can see where they are headed so getting lost is not an issue.

if you are going on the summer, be prepared as nearly all of the trail is out on the open with NO shade from the sun.

took the Gondola up. still a hard hike, but excellent trail and 360 views. pair of Kea's live near the summit and will come and beg for snacks.
the wind can get pretty strong at the top. well worth doing

My husband and I did this hike our first full day on the South Island . We recommend taking the gondola up and starting the hike from there. Your knees definitely won't regret it on the way down

Amazing views that keep getting better and better as you go! Definitely challenging but more than worth it. Also my advice is to skip the Tiki Trail and take the gondola. I didn't feel the Tiki added anything worthwhile to the hike, plus you'll probably wind up taking the gondola back down either way.

The name of the track is misspelled on here. it's Ben Lomond.

Tough hike. I started from tiki trail and didn’t ride the gondola up. Absolutely gorgeous views at the summit. We had to wait a little bit for a huge cloud to lift but when it did it was wonderful. Very well marked and easy to follow!

An incredibly challenging hike that boasts views for days and a grand sense of accomplishment! You have the option of hiking up to the saddle or up to the summit. The saddle provides gorgeous views of Lake Wakatipu, and this is a good spot for new hikers to stop. Summit should be hiked with proper boots (for sturdy support). This trail is accessible from the gondola, though you can also catch it from Tiki Trail.

Did this hike in mid December and loved it. I'm not in great shape, so it was a challenge for me.I didn't attempt to go to the summit, just the saddle. You can do the first part hiking through the woods or take the gondola up and start there. I asked two locals and they both advised me to take the gondola and I'm glad I did. It's a steady climb, but the views are amazing!!
