One of the most spectacular short hikes on the North Island, and perhaps in all of New Zealand, is the Mahinepua Bay walk. The hike packs quite a wallop as it takes you to a secluded, sandy beach only reachable by a short gravel road (quite passable by car) where the trail begins on the left side of the beach as you face the ocean. From there you park your car and cross a fence to farm road that leads to the top of small spur where you follow the cliff line 50 to 100 meters high to a navigational trig (for ship headings) at the end of the peninsula. Throughout the hike you get postcard perfect views of both sides of the rugged and nearly straight-up ocean-bounded strip of land that also provides long views of the breathtaking coastline. Compared to many trails in New Zealand, this track is very well marked and maintained with wooden steps cut into the sides of the steepest parts of the up-and-down path, providing secure footing and no sense of danger. Although relatively short, the track feels longer due to the many steps needed to climb the vertical terrain and also the delays experienced by the constant stopping in order to take yet another photo of the memorable landscape. Give yourself a good 3 hour time budget to complete it as this is one track that you'll want to take your time on.

Beautiful hike! Just as said in previous reviews, hikers are rewarded with amazing views all around. The hike was 6km in total, 6.25km if you do the loop as well. We are relatively experience hikers and completed the track in 1.5 hours although the sign said 2 hours.

one of the best hikes in the Northland! A really good workout for an overall short distance. some steep inclines with steps but the views are awesome and you can see the bay side and the ocean side as you hike.

the beautiful hills and the colors of the water in the bay are amazing! trail is well-marked and maintained. I highly suggest this hike.

Afterwards, stop at WAINUI Bay and have a snack on the beach. sand beach, beautiful water and just a few people.
