HikingGreat!

Beautiful part of NZ. Majestic beaches and patches of nice forest. Lots of cheeky wekas to keep it interesting.

CampingGreat!

The most incredible hike and my favourite tramp during my NZ trip. We spent two days walking the track in Sept but wished we had spent longer! The track was quiet (due to season) and we feel it gave us a much better experience. We got the water taxi to Onetahuti and hiked to Anchorage/Torrent Bay where we spent the night in the newly built hut. Met some awesome people there and had our dinner on the beach under the milky way (wearing lots of layers of course!). It's also possible to see glowworms inside a rock formation at the top of the beach but watch out for tidal changes. The next day we hiked back to Marahau, stopping off at Clepatra's Pool which I'd definitely recommend. The water is freezing but make sure to try out the natural waterside. The entire track is beautiful and very well signposted with lots of good lookout spots and plenty of awesome beaches to stop for food breaks etc. You might even spot seals/dolphins!

BackpackingGreat!

Spectacular hike with great hut support so, with planning, you can ditch the weight of your tent. Truly stunning coastal hiking across isolated golden beaches with wonderful swimming and occasional wildlife (orcas, dolphins, seals, penguins, and great forest birds). Our kids (7 and 11) hiked this section in 4 days barefoot (10-13km a day, including one in the rain). The northernmost section was my favorite, with the low tide crossing and Goat Bay beach section. We used Abel Tasman Guides to help with the logistics and they were really great. The aqua taxi options in the area mean you can really break up the sections pretty easily. Don’t skip Cleopatra’s Pools for an exceptional swimming spot and ask the DOC rangers about gloworms in the areas. This is all wonderful.

Backpacking

Kayaked the first few days of this track and hiked the rest. Have done this track 3 times but different ways. It's beautiful and if you decide to kayak then you'll see seals and penguins swimming next to you, but you may also hit rough water. When hiking, this trail undulates a lot so its a bit strenuous, but it's good for the legs. Keep in mind the tides here have big changes in NZ so do tidal crossings only at certain times a day or you'll be stranded. The Onetehuti tidal crossing now has a bridge i believe. Views are beautiful and water clear. Paradise... but effing cold.
