To experience what many people call the "World's Greatest Day Hike" you will need no permits, however, transportation arrangements must be made for both ends of the hike, so make sure you do some planning! You must also be mindful of shuttle pick-up times if you decide to summit Mt. Tongariro or Mt. Ngauruhoe (both cannot be done within the same day). There are sections of the hike that are considered active volcano areas, and the trail has optional side trips to Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe (famously known as 'Mt Doom' in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) as well as passing Mount Ruapehu.

Mountain Shuttle offers a secure car park on both ends of the track along with their shuttle service. There are many other shuttle services offered, even ones that will shuttle you from Taupo (such as Adventure Shuttles).

Incredible experience crossing in winter, was far less technical than we expected and had been advised but definitely required crampons, ice axe, appropriate clothing and decent preparation.

Awesome, stunning day hike Would recommend booking a guided tour with it being extra snowy/questionable visibility. We used crampons + ice axe which made things safer/easier We got unlucky and had very poor visibility most of the day, forecast was sunny but it is what it is. Looking forward to coming back in Summer. I dont think its as difficult as Ben Lomond, Roys Peak etc but be prepared! Its long.

Awesome. Tried to do the Tongariro three times before weather cooperated. Hard, but so worth it. I did it in 2015 and there were a ton of people. Can’t imagine how busy it is now.

amazing hike. very hard when its cloudy and super windy. struggled on the summit because the wind was too strong for me to walk without support. be careful, be prepared, be fit. with all that, it's an amazing experience.

Amazing track! We loved every minute of this hike. It's a super diverse trail that winds up and around volcanoes, springs, craters, beautiful thermal lakes and then down through beautiful bush with epic views of Lake Taupo and the area. Highly recommend! I wouldn't attempt without checking weather conditions first as it is an alpine crossing which gives there opportunity for snow even in the summer. I also recommend this for intermediate hikers. Great day though!

Amazing trail through the Volcanos, the hike is challenging especially on the top. But well rewarded by the view and landscape. We walk the trail on the first weekend after Lockdown and it was quite a traffic on the way, not queued up but every time some one around. In peak session I can imagine it will be traffic jam. We walked 6h in total. To enjoy this trail it’s really depends on the weather, we had a good day but on the top it was still freezing and windy. Proper equipment is necessary. Overall a must do trail.

Great trail- it took us around 6 hours to finish it all. It is heavily trafficked but I understand why. The variety of scenery ranges from forests, alpine shrubs, lake overlooks, volcano terrain, and vibrantly colored pools. A must if you have a day in the North island.

Fascinating scenery, volcanoes, scree. Even so I wouldn't say it's the best day hike in the North Island at all. Very, very busy. Took us 6-7 hours at a leisurely pace. Definitely worth doing but not mind blowing

Love this trail, well kept but with tons of people everywhere. Not very green but a very unique hike. Would do it again.

A unique experience. Never hiked in a long line of people. But totally worth it. Once you except that this is not a wilderness experience, you’ll have a memorable experience.

I had high expectations when I read this was one of the best day hikes in the world, and was not disappointed. To be honest the scenery is not the most stunning mountain pass, lava field, or meadow you'll ever see, but they're still top class and what makes this hike spectacular is the sheer variety of world class scenery you encounter in a relatively short 12 miles. You'll thank yourself for wearing solid hiking boots during the scree field descent in the middle. Also, if you can try to avoid the Saturday morning crowds.

Very fun trail. We finished in just under 6 hours with lots of stops for food and pictures. We paid for the shuttle. Definitely recommend that.
