To experience what many people call the "World's Greatest Day Hike" you will need no permits, however, transportation arrangements must be made for both ends of the hike, so make sure you do some planning! You must also be mindful of shuttle pick-up times if you decide to summit Mt. Tongariro or Mt. Ngauruhoe (both cannot be done within the same day) as outlined here. There are sections of the hike that are considered active volcano areas. For the version of this hike without summiting Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, see here: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/new-zealand/manawatu-wanganui-region/tongariro-alpine-crossing

Spectacular views!! Tongario track was well groomed and quite manageable. Mt. Ngauruhoe was two steps up, one step down. Lots of loose rock.

An amazing hike, well worth it. There are a handful of very steep portions, but over all the hike is not too bad. It gets windy at the top so bring a wind breaker. I went at the beginning of December and a wind breaker was enough for me. There are bathrooms but no drinkable water on the trail.

HikingClosed

The peak was closed the day I visited due to sustained 70km/h winds with gusts up to 143km/h. So I decided to park at the start (4 hour maximum) and hike in-and-out. I did the same at the end. As a result, I was 8km short of hiking the trail in both directions and saw nearly everything I wanted to twice. The trail is very diverse and that helps keep you fully engaged for ~6-8 hours. There is lowlands, steep climbs, a dirt crater, alpine ascent, emerald and blue lakes, above-the-treeline scrub, steep descents, a lush forest, waterfall and stream. Highly recommended.

Great day hike. Well maintained trail however tons of people. Lakes are beautiful but never touch them. They are sacred to the Maori. Amazing how many hikers don't know this or don't care. Bring layers, rain gear, at least 2 liters of water and lunch. In my opinion, this trail is not difficult at all... It's just a bit long for most (12+ miles).

Trail is a freeway compared to trails in Washington state. Miles of trail mat. Which is very nice on the feet. Coming off the top you have a 350foot scree slide down the trail

Wow, what a hike. Don't be fooled by the start with the paved path and wooden stairs. That will get you to the first stopping point. From there the trail turns to dirt and becomes more challenging. It's quite beautiful as you travel up and down volcanos, the crater lakes and it's your choice to hike up/ skip Mount Ngauruhoe. Beware though as that hike is all sand. After your long hike, you travel through a beautiful forest and river. The perfect way to finish! Defienitly arrange for a ride to the start and leave your car at the end. Bring lots of water/food, a rain/wind jacket (it gets VERY windy) and sunscreen. Take your time and also, stay to the side so others can pass. Trail gets very busy so be mindful of others! I'd recommend going as EARLY as possible.
