Beautiful long walk. The last part up to the upper Tama Lake is the only challenging part (or better to say the way down) because its slippery on the loose rocks. Not as crowded as the crossing and absolutely beautiful scenery! Sun protection is advised since there is no forest after the Taranaki Falls. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/tongariro-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/tama-lakes-track/

Completed this trail on 10th of July, starting around 11am and reaching the Lower Tamas Lake around 1pm. The majority of the hike was on the easy side of moderate and the description is correct that the only challenging part is between Lower Tamas and Upper Tamas--but definitely do both, you're already there! Quite muddy especially on the way back after the trail joins the Taranaki Falls loop, but otherwise doable in preferably waterproof shoes, though trekking poles would have been nice for the way down to stop yourself from sliding a bit. Definitely bring a coat for the top, and stay to enjoy the view, we had lunch at the top!

This was my first semi alpine truck & it didn’t disappoint. Amazing views from the top. I did this today and I couldn’t believe how gorgeous it was. Definitely wear sunscreen but take a coat as well. Can get cold out in the open and trekking up to the upper Tama lake. Definitely worth the walk up if you’ve gone all the way out to the lakes. I did the upper Taranaki falls trail to head out & stopped at the bottom of the falls on the way back. Would recommend going that way. As the walk was quite pleasant heading out to start. I left on sunrise and Mt Ngauruhoe was in clear view, as was Mt Ruapehu. It is alpine though so keep an eye on the weather as it changes fast.

Super randonnée ! Le point de vue sur les lacs est magnifique. Venir par beau temps pour voir les belles montagnes autour. Attention, prendre de l’eau et un chapeau. Il y a des toilettes sèches sur place (ne pas oublier son pq)

Great trail - started at dawn to get the best of it.... got surprisingly busy later... lots of people including families and kids passed us on the way back. Also stunning lighting earlier in the day and so peaceful. Was 1c starting an 10c coming back (late May) would be even nicer in spring when streams are flowing.

Beautiful track where you can see both of the volcanos. Compare to the Crossing almost no people.

5 heures de randonnée pour une vue magnifique au sommet malgré les nuages car le vent souffle et les nuages bougent très vite !

Unbelievable views. I love this hike because it has a little of everything—mountain views, forest walk with a stream, 2 waterfalls, 2 lakes. Gets difficult when you get to the last 45 minutes to Upper Tama Lake. Completely worth the long hike to the lakes as well as the tough hike up at the end.

really beautiful walk. not hard, just long. the last part up to the upper tama lake is the only challenging part (or better to say the way down) because its slippery on the loose rocks. other than that really recommendable! not as crowded as the crossing and absolutely beautiful scenery! if you can't do the crossing, do this!! sun protection is advised since there is no forest after the Taranaki Falls.

Quite well maintained track, most able-bodied people should be able to manage the walk. The only part you have to watch your footing is the steep (optional) climb at the end from the lower lake to the upper lake, but it's a good challenge and adventure. Great views at the tops. A bit of a long, monotonous walk through the scrubby brush.

Great hike. Last push was a bit hard in strong wind. The view at the top was amazing.

Fantastic hike. Well marked Trail. I did it on a Thursday morning (on the trail at 8:15 am) in the winter and I didn't see a soul for the first 3 hrs. Very peaceful and had great views. I turned around at the lower lake because it looked like the weather was going to turn (it didn't).

This trail was a great alternative to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which we weren't able to do due to weather. The trail itself was in good condition and lined with markers along the way, and with the exception of the last push to the upper lake, the elevation gains were moderate and manageable. The trail up to the upper lake was quite loose, so use care when descending. Overall, a very enjoyable hike.

Although we originally planned on doing the alpine crossing, the weather was not favorable for that hike. This was recommended to us as an alternative. An enjoyable hike

Superbe rando avec le volcan Ngauruhoe en point de mire.Des paysages grandioses,un sentier très bien aménagé jusqu'au Lower lake la montée vers upper lake est raide et escarpée mais la vue au sommet vaut l'effort.

Very cool if you're into volcanic geology. It is a bit long and dull in spots, but absolutely worthwhile.

70% of the trail was pretty flat. The view was fantastic. A bit boring on the way back.
