The track is in the Pohangina Valley, about 35 minutes from Palmerston North. From Ashhurst, drive north along Pohangina Road. Turn right at Raumai onto Pohangina Valley East Road. The two trailheads are sign posted. The loop track may be started at either car park. The route shown here combines the two loop tracks, making an easy 5 to 6 km walk. In very wet conditions, it may be best to do only the northeastern Pettifor Loop as sections of the Gilchrist Loop can get muddy. Fantails, tui, bellbirds, and keruru are abundant. There are large totara and kahikatea, but also other native and introduced tree species.
