This epic mountain bike ride is an amazing journey across various ecosystems in New Zealand. You begin in the Southern Alps near Mount Cook and cycle through gravel roads, single track, paved roads, and trails to the ocean. While the elevation you will ride each day is relatively moderate, this is a challenging ride due to the distance and the remote nature or many of the areas you cross. Be sure to be prepared, in shape, and have a good mountain, cross, or gravel bike as well as a patch kit, tubes, and clothes for various weather. Aboiut halfway through the first day you will need to take a helicopter across the Tasman River in order to complete this classic version of the ride. Prices start from $125 per person, with a minimum of 2 people. If you do not want to do this, start near the bottom of Lake Pukaki. Summer and autumn are nice times to ride. Spring can also be pleasant, although there is sometimes rain and wind around that time of the year. At all times of year you should be prepared for changing weather and the colder weather of the high elevation climates. There are companies that will transfer your bags from place to place if you do not want to ride with them. For a list of segments with info on each day of riding, see here:
