The tunnel at Tunnel Point was built after the Pararaha Mill burnt down in 1881. The existing existing tramline from Whatipu to Pararaha was extended up the rugged west coast to Karekare. The tunnel was used for a tramline for several milling operations which took place at Karekare and Piha intermittently during the period 1881-1921.
