La Malinche, an inactive volcano also known as Matlalcueye or Malintzin is located in the states of Puebla and Tlaxcala in Mexico. From the trailhead (19.27939,-98.04243), walking along the paved road for about 0.1 of a mile you will find the trailhead on your right. You will hike for about 3.5 miles on a not too steep trail in the middle of the forest with beautiful plants, flowers and tall trees. Then you will reach the last part of the forest called La Placa, from here you will find a more steep sandy section, take the path on the right side that does not have much sand and that will take you to the peak named The Pyramid. Do not be afraid of the following sections with a lot of rocks, steeper but not difficult to climb. Once on the summit, enjoy the wonderful views, from where you also will see other famous volcanoes of Mexico. On your return, before reaching The Pyramid, take the sandy path to your right, it will be easier to walk down. It is better to hire a guide, they have a lot of experience on the trail and they have equipment that they can lend you. Bring a good pair of hiking boots, no tennis shoes, and appropriate clothing and of course snacks and plenty of water.

My first solo 14er. I don’t believe you need a guide, the hike is pretty straight forward. To get here I took a bus from CAPU Puebla on a Atah bus to Apizaco at 6am. From there I took a colletivo (large van/ bus) at 8am to arrive to the trailhead around 9am. The same bus leaves Malinche at 5pm. You have to start this hike in the morning, police clear the mountain at 2pm. The resort closes at 5pm but you can rent cabins or camping gear here (cash only) if you wish to stay the night and start the next morning. Took me 5:45hr round trip, including a 25min break at summit. Yes it’s true stray dogs will come all the way to the top with you.

Did this today (3-6-20) and it was incredible. We started at 3:30am and summited at sunrise. Yes there are some difficult sections and you need determination, but the beauty makes everything worth it.

Loved this hike, amazing sunrise. A couple of tough sections once you break the tree line (namely the sand), recommend this

Great hike with some nice scrambles near the summit. I started at 5am and completed it in 6 hrs not including my time spent at the top. Very well marked up until the tree line, then just keep an eye out for orange markers, use common sense for the rest. Keep right of the sand to go up or your slide back nearly every step, but use the sand to go down. Definitely not for a beginner, the combo of altitude and rock scrambles will beat most people down. I clocked it at 13.6 km from the Malinche resort with 1384m elevation gain.

This is quite an amazing hike and one of the most difficult hikes I’ve been on. Starting elevation is 10k and the summit is 14k. When added this elevation to the distance it makes for a challenging hike. But that is not all that awaits you along the way. At tree line you will find yourself climbing a steep pitch of very soft scree if you stay on the default path up to a ridge. Work your way up the fringes and not the middle where you will find firmer footings. Once on the ridge the climb is steep with much firmer footing until you get to a buttress and start boulder hopping where the trail gets very steep again. Just before the summit you get back to a more normal firm path for a short distance. The summit is a short scramble to the top. If you get there on a cloudless day the views are incredible. Start early this time of year because if you are not on the summit well before noon you may see nothing but clouds from the top. We started at 4:00am and were at the summit by 9:00am. I was in a large group of local hikers from the city of Huamantla that were much slower than I usually hike but everyone we saw on the trail were not much faster.

Good hike with amazing views. Is slow going due the altitude and would recommend good level of fitness, is steep in some parts. Trail is in good condition, dusty at times. Watch for cold winds at the top.

Didn’t summit but climbed just short of the rock scramble to the top. Used is an acclimatization hike in prep for Ixta and Orizaba. Definitely a doable hike, just take it slow and easy if you are not used to the altitude. Trail was in good condition, and spent the night in the cabins at the resort area. Do it if you’re in Mexico looking to prepare for climbing higher mountains.

I would not consider this a medium difficulty hike, compared to the ones I’ve done in the US. I would rate this as hard. I hiked this trail in winter time and enjoyed it a lot. The forest and the view at the summit are gorgeous.

You need a moderate condition and a powerful mind to reach the top, the view right there is amazing.

This is a trail through a beautiful forest. We started very early in the morning and we saw a wonderful landscape at sunrise. The difficult area begins at the end of the forest, sandy and rocky but not difficult. Once at the top, I could contemplate a wonderful landscape and also the volcanoes Pico de Orizaba, Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl among others, being there was an unforgettable experience.

Nice altitude climb. Relatively easy compared to the other volcanoes
