Getting There

This loop trail starts at Santa Rosa de Lima, you hike across the mountain to la presa (dam) de Peralillo, return by the Camino Real through the little town of Puerto de Santa Rosa, and arrive to the same point in Santa Rosa de Lima. From the start point (21.07320, -101.19529) walk by the Camino Real, that crosses the town, and about half of a mile to your right you will find the entrance to the trail. At this point you leave the Camino Real behind and start hiking up by the Sierra de Santa Rosa. The trail is well marked, in some sections it seems that you lose it but you find it again easily. In about half of a mile you will reach to a beautiful plain area named Llano Largo, take a moment to walk and admire this place. From this point you start walking down for about a mile until you arrive to the dam (Presa de Peralillo). You will be surprised by the beautiful view of the mountains and small arroyos (mainly during the rainy season). When you get to the dam, leave your backpack for a moment, walk and contemplate this beautiful place, you will love it! People come here during weekends driving by the road. Once you rest for a while, you walk up on the trail along the edge of the dam until you reach the road that leads you to Santa Rosa de Lima, passing by a little town named Puerto de Santa Rosa and continuing to enjoy this beautiful landscape. You can stop in Santa Rosa de Lima, walk a while in this nice town and eat a typical regional dish. This loop trail is one of the several trails that Sierra de Santa Rosa has to explore, try it first, you will love this beautiful place with wonderful landscapes.

From the city of Guanajuato, take the road to Dolores Hidalgo (HW 110), in about 12 miles you will find the town of Santa Rosa de Lima. Take the Camino Real (NE) and start walking from the point located at 21.07320, -101.19529. The trailhead will be just less than a mile from this point.

This was an awesome trail, but if you’re going to do the entire loop, it gets very difficult coming up the valley out the west side of the reservoir. The east side of the trail is moderate to easy, but do not attempt the west side of the trail alone or if you are not in good enough shape for a difficult hike. We had two beautiful dogs hitchhike along with us from the trailhead back into Santa Rosa. I don’t know who’s dogs they were, but the were very friendly and well behaved. They left the trail a few times but stayed parallel with us the whole time and made for great hiking companions. If you do hike the difficult portion of this trail, the views are amazing and worth the work!

The Sierra de Santa Rosa is an ideal place to hike and enjoy nature. I could not imagine how close to the city of Guanajuato in Mexico there would be such a fascinating place, everything there is beautiful. I hiked on this mountains and visited the little town of Santa Rosa de Lima during the rainy season, but it was a day without rain with a pleasant climate, and a little fog that gave a very nice touch to the landscape. The dam is an amazing place, here I was resting and enjoying some pleasant moments of quietude. Definitely I will come again and explore more trails of this beautiful sierra.
