Terrible. Some nice picturesque, leafy switchbacks quickly give way to ultra-punishing straight vertical staircase through jagged, dusty skree. Some good views but really? Definitely NOT worth the suffering your knees and ankles will go through. Don’t believe the other reviews. I can only guess that they’ve been hiking in Japan so long that their standards have fallen to the point where this trail is acceptable. Anybody who says this trail is “refreshing” or “fun” or “moderate” is a jerk. Also: crowded. We went in late Feb on a three day weekend and even with the colder weather and the (many)!rest-stops closed there were way too many people on it. Elderly hikers wearing their annoying bells everywhere. Jabbering groups and jangling trail runners. Ugh. No. Also: annoying to get to. Bus 2 from station stops running early - we had to take a cab back from visitor center and we were very lucky to get it. The only time to hike with 3 hours of Tokyo is on weekdays or in the rain. This the only time you might get on a trail near Tokyo that isn’t packed. Even when the crowds are absent, many trails are terribly designed vertical staircases. This is one of them.

Hiked on 11/23/19 via Yabitsu toge. AllTrails shows out&back from Ookura bus stop, but I took the hike from Yabitsu toge bus stop (took the bus from Hadano train station). The trail from Yabitsu has more variety in terrain including rocky wall with chains to descend, gives you a bit of hair-raising experience. The view of mt Fuji is rewarding at the peak. There are huts selling drinks along the trail. (My record doesn’t show the hike from Yabitsu to the peak)

This is an intense hike, but happily there are a few places to get food / drinks along the way to help you recharge. At the summit there is also a place selling refreshments, and you can also pay to stay the night if you wish.
