The Lagazuoi Tunnels were created by Italian soldiers during World War I and today they are available for the public to enjoy. Classified as a beginner’s via ferrata (the Via Ferrata Galleria del Piccolo Lagazuoi), the journey is fully equipped with cables and equipment to help guide you through the dark and rocky terrain. It is recommended to bring gloves, a headlamp or light, and a helmet. It is a great activity to do if the weather is less than ideal, as you will be covered most of the way. In fact, once you enter the tunnels you will only have sporadic glimpses of the outside world through manmade windows in the rock until you reach the exit. There are two ways to experience the Lagazuoi Tunnels. Arguably the more common method is to take the cable car from Passo Falzarego up to Piccolo Lagazuoi (the smaller peak of Mount Lagazuoi) and then descend through the tunnels. For those looking for more of a challenge, it is entirely possible to hike both up and down through the tunnels (trail link). If you want to make this journey a little easier, you can send your pack up on the cable car for a fee and collect it at the top for your journey back down. Outside of the tunnels at the top you’ll find Rifugio Lagazuoi and the summit of Piccolo Lagazuoi. Stop at the rifugio for a bite to eat with a view, or stay a while and enjoy the Finnish sauna.

This recording is of the descent after using the funicular to summit. We did not use the trail that goes through the tunnels.
