Trail marker indicates that you can got to Ruvigliana. In 45 mins or Cassarate in 1:15. Those are pretty conservative times

Hiking

Completed September 24th, 2019. Walked 3.4 miles from hotel in Lugano to gandria to reach the trail head. Prior to starting we walked down into the charming and seemingly deserted village of gandria and found a cafe open for a pre-hike cappuccino. Awesome view of the lake in the cafe. Hike itself was mostly well marked, and consistently steep, as advertised. The village of Bre was adorable. We went right at the fork on the way up and it was shorter and steeper as expected. Came down the other way and was more gentle on the old knees. Views at the summit were great! It was our first hike in the region and the view helped orient ourselves with the landscape. After we made it back down to bre we cheated and jumped on the funicular and rode it back down to Lugano. It was the first means of transportation in which we made use of our newly acquired Swiss travel pass... great way to break in the pass and save the knees. My only grip about the hike was the significant portion of rocky path. The rocks are mostly set, and it’s evident a lot of love has been put in to build and maintain the trail, but it’s a killer on old knees coming down. Would definitely do it again.

Really nice and challenging hike. The views are well worth it. It’s very hard to get to the start of the trail by bus so expect few extra miles if you start from Gambria.

Heavy trail for running! Many parts have to be taken slowly. 100% off-road within nature.
