Amazing views where the trail ends. Well worth it. Not overly overgrown and well marked
being a Florida flat-lander, this was an uphill slog! It was a 2200' climb over 3 1/2 miles to the peak, then down 200' to the views. the views are spectacular of Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna and Lake Como. I downhill portion was pretty treacherous. there is a lot of gravel and scree, so slipping is a hazard. lots to see along the way, trenches, a church, a cross, some old houses and ruins. the trail in not well marked. a spring water pipe about halfway up.
Amazing views. Steep climb in areas, great for trail jogging, good workout. Once I got to the highest elevation I could not continue down trail to the church since it was overgrown. I attempted to break through with large stick but I could not go any further. Still worth it as you have great views on the way up. Coming back I attempted to go down back way as I was staying south of starting point, but it looked like private property with electrical fence for cows.
strenuous for first 2 miles, around 750-800 ft climbed per mile but well worth the views. from San Martino you have access to a network of trails connecting peaks and cities.
