Cavazzo lake is the largest natural lake in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Also known by the name of Lake of the Three Municipalities, however recognized (rightly) by the municipality of Cavazzo Carnico. The valley of the lake was crossed before the last glaciations by the Tagliamento river. During the last glaciation it was occupied by an imposing ice cap that extended up beyond the current sliding bed of the Tagliamento. Upon its withdrawal, the glacier left a deep depression and a barrier of conglomerates that separates the lake from the Tagliamento valley ("Sella di Mena") to the north. The lake subsequently formed stretched up to the Tagliamento (current course) but withdrew, leaving a wreck of a glacial lake basin of almost double dimensions. Currently, in addition to the waters of the hydrographic basin, the waters of the Ambiesta or Verzegnis reservoir are poured after a journey through the tunnel and hydroelectrically at the exit near Somplago. Many water sports here and also world paragliding competitions.
Nice flat trail around a beautiful lake! Half of it (East side) was on gravel path and went through beautiful wooded areas, right next to the lake. Other half (west side) was mostly on the street. Would probably stay on east side. The lake itself has lots of grassy areas, picnic tables, great for family gatherings!
