In Mitzpe Ramon, its hard to find trails that are easy to walk, circular and that leave directly from town and into the tremendous landscape. Mt. Gamal path is exactly all that, and although it starts in a not-so-glamorous part of town and then crosses a grim-looking school-of-antennas, it leads straight to the cliff face of the spectacular Ramon Crater and its breath taking scenery. From here on the path is parallel to the edge of the precipice and the crater is revealed in its full glory. On the way you pass the Har HaNegev field-school. This is a guesthouse and an educational centre belonging to the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, which is Israel´s biggest environmental organization, and you can always find a professional passionate desert-lover here to talk to. Mt. Gamal is only a few minutes along the rim from the field-school. Gamal means camel in Hebrew, and the mountain got its name thanks to its obvious camel shape. The climb to the lookout platform on its top is very easy and absolutely worth your while. If you are looking for a very short and very easy hike starting and ending in Mitzpe Ramon, this is the one, and any Mitzpe Ramon resident will tell you that it has the vistas of the most beautiful landscape in the world. Despite the trek being easy, it is still not advised for the hot hours of the summer days, so if you do come in summer, try to restrict yourself to walking in the morning or late afternoon. Don´t forget to wear your hat and to bring water. Though it is a very short hike, you can always count on the field-school for water, and even for a bus back to town if you happened to get tired.
