This stretch passes through two of the most scenic valleys in Wicklow. The walk starts well, passing through Derrybawn Forest past the Monastic City and Poulanass Waterfall. Leaving the Wicklow Mountains National Park, there is then the first of several long slogs through the spruce forests. The Way eventually emerges from the trees at Borenacrow pass, a saddle between Mullacor and Lugduff mountains, where there are excellent views of the Glenmalure valley and Lugnaquilla, Wicklow's highest mountain. The Way then enters Glenmalure Forest and begins a long descent to the valley floor. This section is not too bad with enough breaks in the trees to get good views of the valley, including Carrawaystick waterfall. Entering Drumgoff Forest, passing a stone pillar marking the halfway point of the Wicklow Way, and into a lengthy, mostly uphill, stretch through dense forest with no views. Interestingly J. B. Malone, originator of the Wicklow Way, waxes lyrically about this stage and the views of Croaghanmoira and Fananerrin in his book, The Complete Wicklow Way. It seems the trees had not grown so high when he wrote his book in 1988! Sadly all there is now is a long slog to the end of the stage at Iron Bridge. To paraphrase John Betjeman, "Come friendly chainsaws and clear fell Drumgoff!"
