It is, perhaps, not fully appreciated how rich the Dublin Mountains are in ancient monuments, some of which date back thousands of years. This guide describes a circular route around the northern fringes of the Dublin mountains, taking in three different types of ancient monument, dating variously from the Neolithic (late Stone Age) and Bronze Ages. Wedge tombs are the most common form of ancient monuments in Ireland and are found throughout the country. They are so-called because of their shape: wide at the entrance and then narrowing and sloping down towards the back with one or more chambers within. Passage tombs are the best known type of tomb on account of the famous one at Newgrange. There are many more such tombs in Ireland, although most of them are much smaller. They still conform to the same basic design, however: a long passage leading to a central chamber. Chambered cairns are the simplest form of monument, consisting of a burial chamber called a cist surrounded by a mound or cairn of stones.

This is a full day's trip across a varied terrain, although all paths and tracks are generally reasonably well-maintained. In dry weather it is probably possible to complete the route in trail shoes. In wet weather some sections can be rather muddy and hiking boots may be advisable. It is possible to reach this walk using public transport, although the buses stop at the Grange Road side of the park so you will have to walk across the park (an extra 2km each way) to reach the start at the College Road car park. Unfortunately, the final leg is on a very narrow stretch of road with the odd blind corner and traffic that travels too fast. So take care on this part.

Great trails around the mountains themselves, this loop has some long sections on roads that don’t have paths. Not too bad if you are solo but could be tricky if in a group.

Backpacking

Excellent time to do this late on a Sunday in the midst of lockdown. Much less people. Nice mix of terrains and when it isn’t packed you can really appreciate the route. Definitely one for the off season without the tourists, which sometimes gets this route an unfair negative reputation. Inclines, declines, Forest, rocks, country lanes it really does have variety to it.

1st half was not that great. Second half was better in terms of views although ended on a narrow road with oncoming cars. Overall a nice challenging trail.

The trail is wonderful. The views are beautiful, but I advise you to be careful that there are not often mobile areas and many other trails intersect, so it is easy to go wrong, which also happened to us, because when the Internet disappeared we followed the yellow arrow, with which we also get lost. In the final we went 8 extra km, which is not easy to say after the already sold track. But all is well that ends well :) together we went 27.5 km ...

It’s a shame the route doesn’t go off the path and follow some of the wilder trails. Half of this route is much nicer full of amazing flowers and wild mountains to look at.

Great trail, one point to note is that the waymarked point to get to Ballyedmonduff wedge tomb is not correct - this covers private property (Mountain Biking Facility) and this route is not open to walkers, however continue only about 50m further down the path (@GPS coordinates 53.23190, -6.23342) and there is a clearly signposted route for the Dublin Mountain way sign posts for a trail that you can follow. The wedge tomb is more easily found then described by following the DMW route until you reach a metal footbridge over the forest road before you reach the open area (the now disused golf course described in the guide which is now part of the Mountain Biking Facility). Cross the footbridge to find the wedge tomb.

Excellent trail, really enjoyable walk with amazing historical monuments along the way. Only downside is the Tibradden Road at the end; it is really dangerous so make sure you don't get caught there in poor light/visibility.

Tough inclines as it starts but the views are rewarding..the inclines at around 8k mark get quite steep and technical, but from there on the trail is undulating that allows you to conserve energy..would definitely recommend..watch out for traffic towards the end of the trail though..

Very nice hike until the road part starts at the end, which is about 2-3 miles, no sidewalks and fair amount of car traffic. Ruined the entire hike imho

Agree with all the remarks about there being too many roads without sidewalks... otherwise the trails themselves are great

Really great trail with amazing views. Ran into some deer crossing the trail in the mountains as well. The recommended detours are also very worth it. Be careful on the last stretch of road (Tibradden road) however. Cars tend to speed more than they should and there are many turns with very bad visibility.

The city views are nice in the first hour but the best part is after the traffic noise from the m50 subsides. I was actually shocked how audible it was and for how far. I would also add a word of caution for the very last stretch is on a main road with no foot path. I found that very stressful especially with a dog in tow. When you’re in the middle though it is spectacular. I would do it again, maybe figure out a different way of getting back. I did it in five hours including two stops for a cuppa! one of which was in a lovely cafe just before the precarious bit of road.
