This incredible route is relatively steep at the start and near the summit, but the amazing views make the effort worthwhile. The heart-shaped lake is a rewarding endpoint along this route. Bring proper footwear because this trail can be wet and muddy after some rain.

I did the Lough Ouler trail in a loop though it wasn’t suggested in the app. I would recommend this if you’re looking to walk a little bit further, but be advised that the way down on the other side of the lake isn’t marked, so you have to find your way back to the river and out through the car park. Hiking waterproof shoes for this trail are a must. I did this with trainers and managed to slip a few times, and my feet were soaked from the minute the trail started. The views are stunning. I recommend stopping to enjoy the views of the lake when you get to the heart-shaped view of it. Once you get to the summit the views are similar to other lakes in Ireland, so don’t miss this unique feature Lough Ouler has to offer. It took us 5 hours from the car park, up and down in a loop. We had awesome weather, sunny all the way and it was still windy at the summit so I recommend bringing a warm jacket for the top.

This is a pleasant trail. We had good weather for it and though it was quite windy towards the summit, it didn’t rain and we had sunny spells throughout. We started at the car park and crossed the river by the first set of stepping stones. This may be tricky to navigate if waters are running high, so care should be taken there to be safe (or you might be wet for the whole hike!) We made our way towards the summit with the lake on our right, and we came back down the other side of the lake on the way down. The descent this way is a far boggier terrain than the ascent on the other side. Boots are an essential especially if it has been raining in the days beforehand. The trail is very marshy so waterproof boots are best if possible.

Weather was pretty bad but very easy trail to follow, well worn. Very boggy in a lot of places. Also I managed to slip into the water when crossing the stream at the very start so watch your step! Would go again

Tough in parts, especially at the start, bit wet boggy in places but Amazing Views and worth the climb up, views of the Heart Lake is breathtaking. Recommend some fitness, hiking boots and layer up, very changeable weather. SUPER HIKE.

We went up and back to the lake with 4 & 7 yr old daughters. The very start and end is steep and boggy - a bit tricky for the kids. Tough to find the trail up, but once you do it’s a lovely hike and well worth the views once you get to the lake. once you cross the river and get back the steep bog, keep right to find the trail. We stopped at the lake but hope to get to summit next time!

This is a jewel! It’s a little hard to get to the lake but not too difficult. I went with 2 teenage sons. Our only regret was that we started out too late in the day and stopped at the lake. We will definitely return to do the summit. Absolutely beautiful scenery. Hard to leave it.
