Follow the coast around the smart suburbs of south-east Dublin and return via a historic walkway. Situated between the mountains and the sea, the coastal area on the south side of Dublin Bay from Dun Laoghaire to Killiney encompasses a number of attractive seaside towns and harbours as well as places of historical and literary significance and sites of ecological importance. The history of the development of this area is tightly bound to the history of Dublin City, especially the difficulties involved in navigating ships into Dublin Port. The great harbour in Dun Laoghaire was built as an asylum for ships to protect them from the storms that batter the Irish Sea. Before its construction, the small harbours around Dalkey developed as a safer alternative place to land with passengers and crew. The great granite quarries of Dalkey also supplied most of the stone used to build Dun Laoghaire Harbour and The Metals, the route the wagons carrying the stone used to travel from quarry to building site, still survives to this day. This walk takes you from the seaside town of Dun Laoghaire and its harbour along the coast through Sandycove and Dalkey before climbing to the summit of Killiney Hill, overlooking the great sweep of Killiney Bay, a view compared with that of the Bay of Naples, and then returning to Dun Laoghaire along the historic route of The Metals.

Since Sundays Foodmarket is in Dun Laoghaire, I was happy to start there, but would start next time in Dalkey, as I do not like running long through neighborhoods. There are several train stations on the way, so you can change the route easily and spontaneously.

A big part is walking in neighbourhoods. However, the walk and view along the coast of Dalkey and on Killiney are amazing.

My only tip is the entrance to both Dalkey Hill and Killiney Hill are a bit hidden and easy to walk past.... keep an eye out
