This was far and away my favorite hike on my Iceland visit. Aside from 3 people near the parking lot I didn’t see another person the whole day! The trail climbs up steeply at the start and let’s you into the main valley. From there you slowly climb up to the ridge and the low clouds turned to a dense fog on the trail. Yellow posts marked the trail well but the fog was so dense at the higher altitudes you struggled to see the next one sometimes. A few spots required scrambling both up and down to continue. I am glad I had trekking poles for stability in several places. With the mix of some scrambling and trail finding I wouldn’t recommend this trail to novice hikers. Bring plenty of food and water and give yourself a buffer on time in case you lose the trail once or twice. I will be redoing this home for sure the next time I come to Iceland.
