The volcano Eldfell is responsible for his eruption in 1973 that almost destroyed the island of Heimaey in Vestmannaeyjar and the access to it. More than 400 building were lost, farms were poisoned ad all the livestock had to be slaughtered. 5300 residents were escorted off the island. Only one year later the people were allowed to came back. Only the half to them came back,
